HCMC proposes capital allocation to speed up progress of key projects

		Mr. Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), visited some places that are blockage points of flooding, environmental pollution, traffic congestion, and medical overload in Ho Chi Minh City on January 4, with the participation of Vice Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Vo Van Hoan, Director of the Department of Planning and Investment of HCMC Le Thi Huynh Mai, and leaders of departments of HCMC. Specifically, the delegation checked the actual progress, listened to difficulties and problems related to investment projects using the State budget, including the new construction project of City Children's Hospital with a total investment of more than VND4.47 trillion.

Work starts on Long Thanh international airport

		Construction of the first detail of Long Thanh International Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai starts on January 5. In the first phase, one runway with a length of 4,000m, taxiways, an apron, and a passenger terminal with other auxiliary works sprawling 373,000 sq.m will be built to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year.

Transport ministry committed to completion of Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro project in March

		Hanoi’s first metro project, the long-delayed Cat Linh-Ha Dong urban railway project, is scheduled to be completed on March 31, said Nguyen Khanh Tung, Vice Director of the project’s Management Board. The trial run of the project completed in December 2020 with more than 70,000km of operations and thousands of train trips tested, enabling the system to operate commercially, said Minister of Transport Nguyen Van The at the meeting.

		New-age carrier Vietjet has been listed in “the World’s Top 10 Safest & Best Low-Cost Airlines 2021” by AirlineRatings, the world’s famous airline safety and product rating website. The list also includes Ryanair, EasyJet, Frontier, Wizz and Westjet. AirlineRatings also rated Vietjet at seven-star level, the highest ranking for aviation safety in the world for three consecutive years now. In making its evaluation, AirlineRatings took into account a comprehensive range of factors including records of safety compliance and incident handling. Especially for this year, the airline’s COVID-19 prevention rating is also taken into consideration.

HCMC calls for investment in eastern innovative urban area

		The Department of Planning and Investment of HCMC has continued to propose a list of projects calling for investment in the highly interactive and innovative urban area in the east of the city. On January 6, Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong, Head of the steering board on building the highly interactive and innovative urban area in the east of the city has assigned the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Planning and Architecture of the city to complete the organizational arrangement of the steering board for the approval of the HCMC People’s Committee before January 10.

		The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has officially announced that Phu Quoc Island will become the country’s first island city. Speaking at a ceremony held on January 8 to announce the establishment of Phu Quoc city, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh said Phu Quoc has experienced tremendous economic and social growth and urbanisation, especially in recent years. The establishment of Phu Quoc city will play an important role in the province’s socio-economic development and in asserting the country’s sovereignty over its waters and islands.

HCMC's retail market grows by 11.9 percent despite pandemic

		Considering the impacts of the pandemic, the growth was surprising, said Huynh Van Hung, head of the municipal Statistics Office. Data from a number of large retailers showed that the market began to bustle again in the second half of 2020 after an initial slump. It was partly due to trade promotion activities undertaken toward the end of the year and a recovery in consumer demand due to the Government’s efficient containment of the disease.
