Samsung to shift some smartphone production to Vietnam due to coronavirus

Samsung Electronics said on Friday that it would temporarily move some smartphone production to Vietnam from South Korea. The announcement was made after another of its Korean staff tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing it to close a factory. A company spokeswoman said the group had suspended operations at its factory in the southern city of Gumi in South Korea after a worker tested positive for the virus. The plant, which makes Samsung’s premium phones like S20 and Z Flip foldable phones, will resume production on Saturday, she said.

$300 million Ben Thanh underground trade centre runs into delay

The delays in construction will make it impossible to complete the project, along with Metro Line No.1 (Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien) at the same time, by the end of 2021. In case the underground trade centre is developed at the same time as Package 1a of Metro Line No.1, the road and surrounding land will not have to be dug up and filled twice, and the metro lines operations will not be hindered.

Vincom supports partners during COVID-19 epidemic

Vincom Retail Joint Stock Corporation announced that it spent VND300 billion (nearly US$13 million) to support its partners in terms of rent at 79 department stores. The purpose of the support is to share difficulties due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. In particular, the support package will be spent to reduce space rental prices for partners and issue vouchers and promotions for customers shopping at Vincom shopping centres. In addition, the corporation will co-ordinate with partners to organise demand stimulus programmes.

$5.5 million mega eco-urban area in Bac Ninh submitted to the PM

The mega eco-urban area is located in Tien Du district and Tu Son town, Bac Ninh province with a total area of nearly 1,700 hectares with seven phases. On March 3, Bac Ninh People's Committee submitted a report for the prime minister to approve the development of this eco-urban area. Accordingly, the land area set aside for developing new eco-urban areas is 1,477.28ha. The total investment of the project is about VND126 trillion ($5.48 billion), VND122 trillion ($5.3 million) of which will be used to develop new urban areas, while the remaining VND3.8 trillion ($165.22 million) will go to renovate and embellish old villages and increasing the local population.

Infrastructure around Saigon metro to cost $64 mln

Underground walkways and other infrastructure along Saigon’s Metro Line 2 will cost VND1.49 trillion ($64.5 million), according to the city People’s Committee. An underground walkway each will be built in three districts, trees planted, sidewalks renovated, and cameras and lighting installed. The work is set to be completed in 2026 simultaneously with the metro line from Ben Thanh to Tham Luong. The cost has increased by 10.4 percent from an earlier estimate, partly due to exchange rates, the committee said.

US remains Vietnam’s largest export market in first two months

The US was the largest export market of Vietnam in the first two months of 2020 with export revenue of US$9.8 billion, an increase of 19.6% over the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

43 Chinese metro experts cleared to enter Vietnam

Forty-three Chinese experts working on Hanoi’s first metro line have been cleared to enter Vietnam, but they will be quarantined before resuming work. The 43 experts working on the Cat Linh-Ha Dong Metro Line will be quarantined in a hotel away from crowded areas, the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control said Thursday. No information was released on when the remaining Chinese experts working on the metro line will receive permits to enter Vietnam.

Hundreds of Hanoians on Friday queued up for hours outside the first Uniqlo store to grace the capital despite the ongoing novel coronavirus threat. The Japanese casual fashion retailer’s second outlet in Vietnam opened three months after its first in HCMC. The two-story Hanoi outlet covers 2,500-square-meters and is Uniqlo’s fourth largest in Southeast Asia.
