Wading through current condotel entanglements

Over the past couple of years, we have witnessed the identification and attempts to solve the condotel issue in Vietnam with limited success.There has been confusion over the term “condotel” and what it really means in practice. The prime minister issued a directive in April 2019, charging various ministries with developing clear regulations and procedures with respect to the condotel market, urging the resolution of the condotel issue by the third quarter of last year. However, we still do not have any clear guidelines.

Hanoi hands out red books to foreigners

Six foreign organisations and 35 foreigners were granted red books to purchase a number of apartments in Hanoi. The recipients are almost exclusively South Korean. The list of apartment projects where these rights were provided includes Vinhomes Sky Lake in My Dinh 1 commune, Vinhomes Green Bay in Me Tri commune, Sapphire 1 and Ryby 1 buildings at the office and apartment building at 136 Ho Tung Mau street.

Vietnam, RoK eye direct flights between countries

The launch of a direct flight between Vietnam’s Can Tho city and the Republic of Korea (RoK) is one of the priority activities that will be organized in this year, said Ambassador of the RoK Park Noh-wan at a meeting with National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan in Hanoi on February 19. The South Korean embassy in Hanoi has cooperated with the Korean community and enterprises to seek solutions to help Vietnam cope with effects of the disease, such as purchasing agricultural products and fruits.

New industrial zone approved for Binh Dinh Province

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has approved in principle the development of Binh Dinh Becamex Industrial Zone (IZ) in the central province of Binh Dinh, according to the province. Expected to cost more than VND3.33 trillion (US$143 million), the IZ will span 1,000ha in Canh Vinh Commune, Van Canh District. It will be developed by Becamex Binh Dinh JSC headquartered in the province's Quy Nhon City.

Vietnam encourages private investment in energy: Politburo

According to the Politburo, Vietnam is facing challenges in meeting national energy security targets and still has to import energy due to insufficient domestic supplies. Many power projects have been delayed and several projects invested by State-owned enterprises have incurred losses while the efficiency of energy exploitation remains low.
The national energy development strategy aims to ensure national energy security, which serves as a foundation for growth. It also prioritises rapid and sustainable energy development along with environmental protection and national security safeguarding.
The strategy also aims to diversify sources of energy and effectively use renewable, clean and new energy sources.

PM issues instructions on facilitating startups

The Directive stated that although the Government has issued Resolution No. 01 on creating favourable conditions for investment and business activities, the Vietnam’s startup ecosystem still faces difficulties and barriers and remains less competitive compared to that of other countries in the region.
Therefore, the PM asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) to urge its business registration agencies to provide detailed guidance and facilitate startups to register new business lines that are not included in the current business line codes and the national database on business registration.

Falling one place to 11th in the global index of emerging logistics markets, Vietnam was still seen as a clear winner in the Sino-US trade war. According to the recently released 2020 Agility Emerging Markets Logistics Index, with an overall score of 5.52 out of 10, Vietnam fell behind several Southeast Asian peers, including Indonesia (4th), Malaysia (5th) and Thailand (9th).
