Vietnam GDP grows at 6.76%

Vietnam’s GDP expanded 6.76% y-o-y in the first half of 2019. Construction grew by 8.9%, services by 6.69%. Foreign trade is estimated at US$245.5 billion. The FDI sector saw a trade surplus of US$15.68 billion (including crude oil), while domestic companies recorded a large deficit of US$15.72 billion. The total trade deficit was US$34 million in this period.

 

 


 

French retailer Auchan sells Vietnam operations to Saigon Co.op

Saigon Co.op has bought out Auchan Retail's business in Vietnam.They include 15 stores the French retailer closed earlier this month, three others that are reportedly making profits and are still open, and e-commerce and online activities. Saigon Co.op will run these stores until the Lunar New Year holiday in February 2020, after which the two sides will sit down to discuss further cooperation opportunities.


 

 

Vietnam, EU to sign EVFTA on June 30 in Hanoi
 

The European Council announced that it has approved the European Union – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and assigned the EU to sign the deals with Vietnam in Hanoi. Once the EVFTA takes effect, over 99% of tariff on goods from both sides will be lifted. Vietnam will remove 65% of import tariff on goods from the EU. Remaining tariffs will be removed in the next decade.

 

 

 

 

AEON to build one more mall in Hanoi

AEON will build a US$280 million mall in south Hanoi, its third outlet in the capital city.It is scheduled to open by 2020. Yasutsugu said there are plans to build 20 malls by 2025. AEON already has four in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and the southern province of Binh Duong, and two others are under construction in Hanoi and the northerrn city of Hai Phong.

 

 

 

Hanoi to begin housing construction for Old Quarter residents’ relocation this year
Hanoi will begin construction of housing by year end to relocate 6,500 families from its Old Quarter as the city seeks to decongest the area. Authorities have been planning to move the families with over 26,000 members to the Viet Hung Urban Area in the outlying Long Bien District since 2002 to reduce the population density in the downtown from 823 people per hectare to 500.This would help the capital preserve its historical heritage and architecture, develop sustainably and boost its economy.

Central Group Vietnam officially introduced the first modern GO! Market in Vietnam at a ceremony on June 28. Located on Hanoi’s Nguyen Xien Street, the first GO! Market supermarket is a professional retail model that meets all needs, from basic to advanced, with reasonable prices, from food, necessities, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) to fashion accessories, electrical appliances, and entertainment options.

 

 

 

 

Government green lights FLC University

The government has officially approved the establishment of FLC University in northern Quang Ninh province. FLC University will be built on some 50 ha in Ha Lam and Ha Trung wards in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province, with total initial capital estimated at VND4 trillion (US$172 million). With three key majors, including high technology, tourism, and aviation, the university expects to enroll its first students at the end of 2020, with an initial enrollment of 600, which is to increase to 6,100 by 2024 and 10,000 by 2035.

 

 

 

Vietnam moves up in global reputation ranking

The 2019 FutureBrand Country Index report released on Tuesday places Vietnam at 61st out of 75 economies with the best reputation abroad. It has moved up three places from its previous ranking in 2014. Vietnam also made it into the group of 10 countries with the biggest gain in quality products, a nine-point rise from the 2014 ranking. In Southeast Asia, Vietnam ranks only above the Philippines (67) and trails Singapore (18), Thailand (39), Malaysia (45), Myanmar (49) and Indonesia (56).
